On my way home from the Made In American festival, I needed good sustenance to block out all the bad food from the weekend. On Monday, the BF and I decided to skip 95 and take the scenic route home. About an hour into our ride we spotted the restaurant (on route 1), made a U-turn, and parked in the spacious parking lot. We didn't know what to expect, it is not updated but not run down. We walked in and asked for a table for 2. She didn't take our name so the BF was kinda worried because there were quite a few people. But 5 minutes later a table was ready. I did notice the table had one place mat. Our waitress was nice and immediately took our drink order. She forgot my bf's orange juice. We waited again for our food which took about 15 minutes. The waitress brought out his orange juice and then my freshly sliced strawberries. Once the food came out, OMG delish. I order French toast with strawberries & whipped cream, and 2 egg whites. He ordered the chipped beef. He said it was some of the best chipped beef he has had in a long time. My French toast was made with Texas toast, crisp but not crispy and delish. The egg whites were cooked well, not overdone and seasoned well. My strawberries were fresh. As far as taste and customer service, this place is tops. Great food, clean environment, casual, family friendly and awesome staff. My minor gripe is the fact that there was one place setting for 2 people and when she brought the utensils for my bf she didn't put them on a place mat, but directly on the table. He was fine with it so whatevs. Give it a try because we definitely will..again.

Short wait for seating. Great service. Good mushroom soup. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered.

Host was very friendly. Restaurant was clean and quiet. Service was a little slow to start, but overall was fine. We ordered chicken fingers which looked to be freshly made, not frozen, a club sandwich that was delicious on wheat bread, perfectly poached eggs, and the gyro. All of the food was very good and filling. It's a little pricey for the diner-type, but for the service and food it's worth it. We'll be back!

My family has been going to this restaurant for years. It has consistently good food, and a friendly staff. I don't understand the low ratings; it's a diner and they do a good job for not a lot of money. We'll be going back again.

I live very close to the restaurant and the food and service are really hit or miss. Breakfast is usually fine, but lunch and dinner are well below average. The have a bar but no real bartender. I martini is a real stretch in this place. I was in tonight and my server warned me the kitchen was slow, which was very true. My order was fine, but three tables around me complained about dirty cups, wrong food delivered, and the wait time. They have a huge average menu and the place is completely out dated. I can say avoid except for breakfast. They need an update on everything.

I love this place. The food is homey and always hits the spot. They serve alcohol, which is a plus. Diner-style food on a huge menu. Staff has always been friendly and we've never had a problem with food, etc. the outdoor seating is beautiful at night, especially when they have a band playing. Oh, this is my favorite place to get coffee. It's amazing. You won't regret ordering a steaming cup of joe here!

To start off on a positive (and the only positive), the servers were very friendly. For that reason, I gave them a 2 star. The menu is MASSIVE and way too extensive. They have a broad array of things, none of which were very exciting. I went with my parents (who did enjoy their food, but I question their judgement having tasted mine). My first thought upon looking at the menu and vibe was that this place is a perfect candidate for one of the Gordon Ramsey kitchen makeover type shows. After perusing the menu for awhile, I felt the "homemade" lasagna may be a decent choice. You get soup and two sides or a salad. I had a large choice there as well, but went with brocolli and fried cauliflower. A bread basket was brought to the table but I'd suggest you pass on it. It looked as if the kitchen took old bread, coated it in a little butter and shook a large dose of garlic salt on top. The bread was cold, unappealing, and way too much garlic. For soup, I had the Manhattan clam chowder. Of all the things I ate there, this was the most appealing. With that said, I'm in no way suggesting you grab the keys and kids to rush here. There was pretty much an entire potato in my soup. I had to cut it in about 5 pieces before I could even start eating the soup. But again, with that said this was the highlight of my meal. On to the main course: lasagna came out and looked good initially. I tried a bite of the fried cauliflower and probably should of stopped there. They tasted more like a ball of cotton breaded. No flavor, barely recognizable cauliflower and basically just an extremely bad munchin from Dunkin. I tried a bite of the lasagna and I thought I was eating an old sock. I can't even describe the taste besides old and blah. I'd rather eat an Encore lasagna then this. I tried a couple more bites and then called it quits. Enough was enough. The server came back after awhile and asked if all was alright. I politely let him know it was gross. He handled it well, apologized and (without me requesting) removed it from the bill. That was very much appreciated. I hope the poor kid sees how horrible this place is and escapes to another spot. The short of it: keep driving. Kennet Square is only a few more miles down the road and you will find much better food.

Friendly server and host. Got seated at booth. Very Quickly. Asked what they were known for and we were told the iced tea and the cream of mushroom soup. We got to taste both. Iced tea was good. I should have gotten the tea too. I ordered coffee to wake me up. Unfortunately, coffee was a bit charred, tasted like it was left on burner too long. The soup was was too thick and mushrooms were definitely from a can. I ordered the Crab cakes - 2 huge cakes. I should have taken a picture. It had huge pieces of crab meat. Tasty with some breading making them flaky and very filling. The famous Sam's chicken special was tasty with the bacon and cheese sauces. The chicken gravy made it taste A-Ok. Huge portion of chicken breast. Makes me wonder what GMO chicken that came from. Oh well. It was worth a shot to have a nice, quick dinner.

Finally stopped in for breakfast today with my son Joey after many many years of driving by, saying we need to try that place! Got there around 11:30 ( Sunday 10/26 ) and they took us to the back dinning area, Had I known I would have preferred the front room/ bar area but it wasn't that big of a deal. Just not a fun room to be in. Didn't really matter after we got our food, everything we ordered came out as expected and we really enjoyed it. Spinach, mushroom & Swiss omelette and Joes "big" breakfast.. Couple eggs, French toast and bacon with home fries. Food was hot and flavorful. Our server ( Stephanie ) was very polite and attentive. She had a pleasant smile and had control of our table so nothing was needed, plus we are easy to get along with as long as the table maintenance is under control. With so many Sunday breakfast places around it will be a while before we go back but we will be back!!

This restaurant - or rather the food - ranks in the top 5 worst meals I've ever eaten. My Dad was in town, and we drive by it all the time and it always seems busy...hmmm. If you like bad diner food (think gluey gravy, mashed potatoes from a box, frozen mixed vegetables) then this is the place for you. While the service was good, the establishment is dated and not very clean, and our three meals were downright inedible. Full disclosure - I've been in the food biz for a long time, and I'm a good cook. We dine out frequently, and we really enjoy good food. My husband and father are not necessarily foodies - but they were disappointed with the food and we scratched our heads as we left as the restaurant was full...I'm not sure I understand the attraction.

Sitting here for about 25 minutes now after we ordered & still no food! Not a good place to come if you have hungry children! Been here a number of times after Longwood Gardens as it is the closest restaurant to the gardens & it's always the same thing..food & service very slow to come out!

Not a bad place for a quick bite to eat. I've been here a few times but I've never been overly impressed with the quality. It serves food like a typical diner. Not too special but not bad either.

I think Dennis W. must not be from the East Coast. Longwood Family Restaurant is a typical east coast diner and the menu would be familiar to anyone from the area including the all day breakfast, porkers, and Monte Cristo sandwiches . It is alittle higher end in regard to decor than most and they had a live band although you still pay at the cash register. The food was pretty well done overall and the crab meat salad and porkers were excellent. Thus if you are interested in some solid well done classic American diner food , for a reasonable price, this is a great choice. However if you want fine dining go somewhere else.

I have no idea why Yelp's review filter has "filtered" 10 reviews of this place that are all over the map from good to bad to indifferent (i.e. it's not like 10 slams or 10 glowing reviews) but since there is only one review showing, I thought I would write another so people can at least see two (assuming mine doesn't get stuck behind the filter for no good reason). Anyway - we stopped by here because I wanted mushroom soup for lunch, this place advertised mushroom soup on a big placard on side of the building, and given that it's in the heart of shroom country I figured the soup stood a chance of being pretty good, and this place also appeared to be casual, as opposed to some of the fancy eateries in Kennett Square that tout their mushroom soup but require dress-up or are only open after 5-6 pm on Sunday. We are fairly new to this area so I am not familiar with whatever this restaurant used to be in its previous incarnation. I figured from its looks it was going to be a "family restaurant" (i.e. a menu similar to a diner) and that it might be a tad pricey for diner food given the area and the proximity to popular Longwood Gardens. I was right on both counts. The advertised dinner specials were in the 15-25 dollar range, which for an un-fancy place like this is on the high side. Food: The burgers (which had some sort of sweet pepper mixed with the meat) and the mushroom soup were good. The soup was basically a bowl of primarily mushrooms coated in a heavy creamy broth. Due to the use of about 3 times as many mushrooms as one normally gets in a serving of "mushroom soup", it had a very strong taste of mushrooms in cream, and not much else. I like it that way. However if you are seeking some gourmet flavor experience or a thinner broth, it may not be to your taste. Also, if you happen to want bread with your soup, the menu notes that it's an extra dollar for one smallish bread roll. While I don't need an entire replenished bread basket on the table at all times, it would have been nice to have at least one roll come WITH the soup (which is already kind of pricey) and then maybe charge only if a person wants extras. My roll was also rock hard and tasted like it had maybe been around in the breadbox for a few days, which put me off asking for any more bread. Service: It was OK, the staff were polite enough, but there seemed to be an oversupply of fairly inexperienced staff (we were visited by at least 3) . Our main server forgot to bring us a few essentials (such as butter for the roll-that-cost-extra) and also didn't clear away everything when the plates were taken prior to dessert - left a dirty fork behind and litter on the table. And please, people, could you vacuum and wash the windows at some time other than when the restaurant is open and people are eating in the same space you're wiping and shining in? It's distracting as heck. As far as where to eat in this place - it's got three rooms, one in the front near the servers which gets full fast, one in the center that is proximious to a lot of swinging kitchen doors and kind of feels like Great Grandma's dark old house, and one on the back deck which we would have liked to eat in because it is sunny and bright and the weather was nice, but it was already occupied by a large family party. I will say that the noise reduction wall between the outdoor party room and the rest of the restaurant kept out most of the party ruckus (little kids hollering, old people talking over them and the like) so we were able to have a quiet meal. All in all, not sure how I feel about going back to this place. I would maybe get food to go (and skip the roll with the soup).

Favorite breakfast venue around Kennett. Don't sit in the booths if you don't like to be watched while eating-- the wait staff hovers by the bar staring at the customers. Great breakfast potatoes. Friendly staff.
(3)Ted S.
Average family style restaurant. They have a fairly extensive menu, but no real specialties. They do have bar service. Food and service have been about average when we have gone.
(3)Henry S.
Average diner service. Extensive menu and never any complaints on the food. During peak times it will take the kitchen a while to get your food out. Breakfast is good also and coupons can usually be found for discounts.

i've been here a couple times as it's right down the street from where i work. both times were for lunch. going to lunch on a weekday from the office is usually a "fast food" type of thing, so the place is usually kind of dead when we go. the staff are a bunch of pretty cool people, never really had a bad server or anything. the food is pretty good. i've had their cheesesteak and their ruben. ruben was full of cheese and meat, not really authentic, but i mean, it tasted good, and isn't that all that matters? (sometimes) cheesesteak was also pretty good, and pretty big too. their fries are also tasty. one thing this place has going for it are it's portion sizes. they are definitely big, and it's good to see some places still believe in giving you what you pay for. they also have a real good deal for lunch. looks like they select random things from the menu each day for lunch, and if you order one of them, it comes with soup, and it's cheaper. i can only speak or their manhatten clam chowder, which was a-ok. light on the wallet, pretty good food, and a nice staff. place is a little "old-timey", if i even know what that means, but hey...it's kennett square, and thats not really what the customers coming here are going to care about anyway. worth a visit definitely.

Longwood Family Restaurant is relatively new to the area and as always, I like to visit a locally owned establishment to spend my hard earned money to keep the tax money locally (and help out the small business owner). We were on our way home from church on Easter Sunday and decided to stop in with the family for lunch. They were moderately busy but had room to squeeze two adults and two toddlers in. This is an OK place, quaintly decorated and the staff seemed pretty friendly. The menu is something short of a movie transcript. Generally, if you have a wide variety in your menu, it is pretty tough to have great dishes available and everything suffers. I learned this from watching my fav celeb chef, Gordon Ramsey. They offer everything from breakfast to dinner and appetizers. While reviewing the lengthy scribe, we ordered our beverages. They brought out these monster cups of OJ for the kids. Seems like a waste to give a kid that much juice and offer it as a "kids size". Not to mention that my 2 year girl spilled half of down the front of her dress, but I blame mom for not paying attention on that one. I ordered iced tea and it was delivered with almost no ice in it. It annoys the every loving piss out of me when you order a glass of iced freaking tea and it shows up with little or no ice. I mean seriously, if you are going to do that, please don't make me ask you for a spare glass of ice. So we order my wife breakfast (eggs and scrapple), french dip for yours truly, a burger for the boy and chicken fingers for the babe. Not 15 minutes goes by and BAM! Our food is delivered. Pretty fast service if you ask me and very impressed. Now I don't mind getting a nice sized meal when I eat out, but I am pretty sure this place is used to serving lumberjacks and truck drivers on a regular basis. We pretty much received a platter of food to eat (more waste, yes I hate waste if you have not caught on yet). Everything was pretty much spot one, no errors. Now it is time to eat. This is where things sort of go down hill for me. Breakfast is breakfast...it's pretty hard to screw that up and my wife was happy. My french dip started out well, but halfway into it, I started to get the real shitty part of the roast beef (fat and cartilage). That is pretty gross. I have worked in the restaurant business before and have probably made 100s of french dips and I never put that crap on a plate. It really is irresponsible and nasty. It's sort of like putting the butt of a head of lettuce in a salad, just wrong. Out side of that, it was OK. The burger for the boy was about the size of his head and the kid has a huge noggin (more waste) and the burger was not cooked all the way through. He never would have eaten it all, so I just cut off the done parts for him. I did try it and it was just OK. Next up, chicken fingers. This is the part of the meal that every dad hope their kid does not finish. Gives us a reason to "help" finish up anything the child does not. There were 3 chicken strips which were rather large (again from the kids menu, maybe the lumberjacks bring their kids in too?) but no complaint here based off my previous comment on assisting. They had absolutely no flavor at all and could be compared to eating deep fried tofu (which also has no flavor). The french fries were all good, so they have that going for them. So overall, I offer 3 stars as an olive branch and hopes that maybe they can slim the menu down and focus on some of their popular items (whatever those are). Do you really need a cheese steak on your menu? There are a bazillion other places within 10 miles that serve them and are probably better than yours. Focus please. We will probably return, but for breakfast only.

This is my first review and I felt responsible to write something because of the other two reviews I just read which had high star ratings. What you read earlier is true the menu is huge and the portions are large. The service is also friendly and quick but if you are interested in food and I'm sure that's what you're interested in because you are going out to eat at a restaurant you need to know that the chef needs to learn how to cook with spices. I do not like to complain but both my wife's food and my food were completely flavorless and I'm not sure how you do that with alfredo sauce which she had on her chicken. I also had a cup of mushroom cream soup which tasted like they just poured in half and half with some mushrooms and warmed up the cup. I really hope they start cooking better food because I live close by and really want an affordable place to eat that is close but this isn't the place to go to for dinner. This should be called Longwood Family Diner because that is the type of food you will get and once you look at the menu and all the options you'll understand why. Go to this place for breakfast not dinner.
